Why Do My Gums Bleed?

Do your gums bleed? Visit Brooklyn Dental Smiles and get back to a healthy mouth

Do your gums bleed? Are your gums sensitive when you brush your teeth? Call Brooklyn Dental Smiles today to arrange personal care by Dr. Eisenberg.

Bleeding gums are one of the most common symptoms of gum disease. When plaque builds up on your teeth it can form a harder coating called tartar that only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove. Bacteria within the plaque causes inflammation in the gums which can become swollen, painful, and cause the gums to bleed.

Say goodbye to sensitive or bleeding gums

At Brooklyn Dental Smiles, Dr. Eisenberg will examine you and determine why your gums are sensitive or bleeding. Rather than relying on a dental hygienist, Dr. Eisenberg will personally clean your teeth and help you devise a home care plan that will help improve your dental health.

“My gums bleed during or after brushing my teeth”

Is this phrase familiar to you? The first stage of gum disease, formally known as periodontal disease, is gingivitis. Gingivitis can often be treated with regular dental cleanings at your dentists office combined with thorough brushing and flossing at home.

Sometimes gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis, which means inflammation around the tooth, is caused when the bacteria in plaque causes so much inflammation that the gums separate from the teeth. The separation causes pockets to form around the teeth, which allow the bacteria to reach deeper below the gum line and cause greater infection. At this point a dentist is required to prevent the disease from destroying  the bone and tissue surrounding the tooth.

Treatments for Gum Disease

Treatments differ based on the individual and the severity of the disease. A dentist may recommend cleaning, medication, or surgery. The best treatment of all is prevention – brushing and flossing as part of your regular routine.

Some people develop gum disease without feeling any negative symptoms. In these cases, regular checkups are important to diagnose and prevent the spread of gum disease.

Gum disease happens to children and adults.  Ask yourself if any of these statements apply to you:

  • My gums bleed or hurt at night.
  • I have bad breath or a constant bad taste in my mouth
  • My gums are swollen or painful
  • My gums are receding
  • I can feel pockets around my teeth

If you identify with any of these statements, it is important to make an appointment with your dentist right away.
